How Many Weekends in a Year? [2023 & 2024] + Calculation Tips

Last updated on February 24th, 2024 at 10:05 am

In this post, you’ll know how many weekends in a year.

Having known weekend dates and numbers helps in planning vacations, entertainment, and planning events.

It’s also an excellent way to do outdoor activities and complete personal tasks.

So in this article, we will go over the weekend calendar with dates, and public holidays, and answer several important questions.

Let’s dive into the details…

How many weekends in a year?

A common year has 52 full weekends or 104 or 105 weekend days including Saturdays and Sundays. For example, in 2023 there are 53 Sundays and 52 Saturdays meaning 105 weekend days. In 2024 there are 52 weekends which means 52 Sundays and 52 Saturdays.

It’s important to consider that the number of weekends in a year depends on whether the year starts with a weekend or not. Let’s say that if a year starts with Sunday or Saturday that means there will be 105 weekends in a year. If it starts with any other day from Monday to Friday then there will always be 104 weekend days.

The leap year consists of an extra day and has 366 days instead of 365. Here February is 29 days instead of 28 days. But the above rule applies the same to leap year. For example, 2024 is a leap year but didn’t start with a weekend so it has 52 weekends or 104 weekend days. It’s meaningless that it has an extra day which didn’t impact the number of weekends.

Types of the year by calendar and weekends

Here’s a table of different years with the number of weeks and total days:

Explanation:

  • Lunar Year: The lunar year in the Islamic calendar is either 354 or 355 days long, consisting of 12 lunar months. It is 10 to 12 days shorter than a Gregorian year, leading to variations in the number of days and weeks.
  • Gregorian Year: The standard Gregorian calendar year has 365 days and 52 weeks.
  • Common Year: This term is often used to refer to a non-leap year in the Gregorian calendar, which also has 365 days and 52 weeks.
  • Leap Year: Leap years in the Gregorian calendar have one extra day, making them 366 days long. They still have 52 weeks but with an additional day.
  • Julian Year: The Julian year on average has 365.25 days. It approximates the solar year but does not account for the exact duration of the solar year. As a result, there is a small difference in the number of days per year.

Calculating Weekends

Here are three simple steps to calculate the weekends in a common year:

  • Get your hands on a calendar
  • Identify the number of Saturdays and Sundays in each month
  • Add the count of Saturdays and Sundays to get the total number of weekends

What factors influence the count of weekends?

Only one factor influences the number of weekends in a year which is the start of the year. If a year starts with Saturday or Sunday then the year has 105 weekends. For example, 2023 has 105 weekends because it started with a Sunday on January 1. So it has 53 Sundays and 52 Saturdays.

While if the year starts with any other day then there will be 104 weekend days. For example, 2024 will start with a Monday so there are 104 weekend days.

The subject of leap year with an extra day doesn’t affect the weekends. Sorry, because it’s meaningless and has no effect on the number of weekends. The only important rule is the above one.

Tips for planning your vacation

Vacation planning is a fun and exciting activity. Here are 10 valuable tips to help you plan your next vacation:

1. Combine Weekends with Public Holidays

Utilize the weekends and holidays to make your vacation longer. Plan your trip around long weekends, where you can take fewer vacation days while enjoying an extended getaway.

2. Book Time Off Strategically

If you have a limited number of vacation days, plan your trips during periods of low workload or when business demands are less intense. This way, you can fully relax and disconnect from work without worrying about pending tasks.

3. Plan Mini Vacations

Not every vacation needs to be a lengthy one. Consider taking shorter breaks throughout the year to explore nearby places or indulge in weekend getaways. Mini vacations can be refreshing and help you recharge without extensive planning or expenses.

4. Check for Local Festivals

Before finalizing your vacation dates and destination, research local festivals and events happening in the area you plan to visit. Attending festivals can offer unique cultural experiences and add an extra layer of excitement to your trip.

5. Start Planning Early

Early planning allows you to take advantage of better deals on flights, hotelings, and activities. Additionally, popular places and hotels tend to fill up quickly, so booking in advance ensures you secure your preferred options.

6. Set a Budget

Determine your vacation budget before making any reservations. This will help you narrow down destinations and activities that align with your financial limits and avoid overspending.

7. Consider Off-Peak Seasons

Traveling during off-peak seasons can lead to cost savings and a more enjoyable experience. Popular tourist destinations often have lower prices and fewer crowds outside of peak travel times.

8. Research and plan your journey

Spend time researching your destination and creating a rough journey. Having a general plan helps you make the most of your time and ensure you don’t miss out on must-see attractions.

9. Notify Relevant Parties

If you’ll be away for an extended period, inform your workplace, family members, and any relevant service providers about your absence. This ensures everything runs smoothly in your absence.

10. Pack Light and Smart

Pack only essential items and versatile clothing. Packing light can save you time and stress at airports, and it leaves space for any souvenirs you may want to bring back.

The days of the week are named after celestial bodies or gods from various cultures. For example, Monday is named after the Moon, Tuesday after Mars (Tiw in Old English), Wednesday after Mercury (Woden in Old English), Thursday after Jupiter (Thor in Old English), Friday after Venus (Frigg in Old English), Saturday after Saturn, and Sunday after the Sun.
